What is GM Cyril Marcelin The Carlsbad Pawn Structure for Cheap?
A practical guide to to one of the most common and critical pawn structures in chess
“The correct strategy is determined by the pawn structure.”
Most of us have probably heard this before, but the importance of pawn structures cannot be overstated. Understanding them and how to play them is a vital part of developing a successful middlegame plan.
The Carlsbad Pawn Structure lays out concrete guidelines on how to play one of the most important pawn structures in chess, taking you from an opening to a comfortable middlegame and endgame.
An integral part of the Queen’s Gambit Declined, the Carlsbad structure can also arise via the Caro-Kann, the London System (with reversed colors), and other popular openings.
A thorough study of this structure is what connects opening knowledge to winning results. It’s no wonder every master knows this structure inside and out!
The Carlsbad Structure

The Carlsbad pawn structure is not only characteristic of the Queen’s Gambit Declined − it can also arise via Caro-Kann, the London System (with reversed colors) and many other variations. A thorough study of this structure therefore pays off for your entire chess career and is part of the toolset that every (future) master should possess.
If you feel comfortable with it, you can build up a complete opening repertoire with both colors based on it and will therefore strongly benefit from a profound positional understanding of this structure which this course should help you to develop.
But you don’t need to be a master to understand it GM Marcelin makes it as easy as possible for you:
🏆 In Chapter 1 you will learn the basic plans, presented in 7 key concepts. Here you will be taught where the pieces should be positioned and which attack/defense resources are available. In Chapter 2 you will then get 50 exercises to train what you’ve learned in Chapter 1.
🏆 In Chapter 3 you will dive deep into the minority attack. Here you will get to know different safe positions which you can use to take the sting out of the attack and to create counterplay.
🏆 Chapter 4 revolves around all of White’s plans in the center and on the kingside − for example pushing the f-pawn or breaking through with e3-e4.
🏆 Chapters 5-7 consolidate the newly acquired knowledge with exercises from games of all World Champions. This also offers a nice historical overview of the game with this structure.
Grandmaster Cyril Marcelin walks you through everything you need to know about formulating the winning plans in the Carlsbad.
He’s seen it many times over the board, and his profound understanding of it has helped him rack up top prizes at many elite tournaments – including 2nd place in the Wijk aan Zee C tournament in 2006.
It’s not just this success that should make him a trustworthy teacher – he’s got more than 25 years of coaching experience under his belt, so he knows what works for those improving their game.
