Why Do Some Players Play Better Than Others?

Why does this happen? Many people play and study chess, but only 1–3% achieve serious success (titles, prizes). What makes this minority different?

It is NOT about talent. I have observed thousands of players and can say this with confidence. Yes, top-level results (2600–2700+) require exceptional talent, but anyone can become a titled player and gain 200–300 rating points.

The key factor is TRAINING.

Many players study chess 8 hours a day (more than many grandmasters) but make no real progress. This means that the main factor is not how much you train, but HOW you train.

This leads us to effective training.

Lack of a Chess School

Education in chess is chaotic. As Emanuel Lasker said, there is no real system of chess education.

There used to be a strong system in the former USSR, and it produced great results — but it no longer exists.

Most chess players study randomly. They don’t have a clear training program. They don’t know what to study or how to study. Many chess teachers are simply slightly stronger players who also don’t truly understand what their students need.

Being a chess player or coach is a profession, just like any other, and it requires a structured system of preparation. Many players mistakenly believe that buying a few books, reading them, and playing games is enough to become strong.

If doctors trained this way, they would make terrible mistakes. Fortunately, they don’t.

To improve, you must train the RIGHT things.
You need a clear training plan that builds a complete system of chess knowledge and develops the right skills at the right time.
