Anti-King’s Indian & Anti-Grünfeld · ChessBase 60 MinutesThe Triceratops System is GM Christian Bauer’s compact answer to the King’s Indian and the Grünfeld: 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nbd2, explained in 5 videos and 1h 16m of video with a PGN file of the lines. Learn one solid formation, prepare for just three Black replies and skip a mountain of c4 theory. Available now on Courses On Budget.

Three Black Replies, One White Formation

Bauer, a French grandmaster and three-time French champion, builds the course on a simple observation: after 3.Nbd2 White keeps the c-pawn at home, so the d4-pawn stays protected and Black’s usual King’s Indian and Grünfeld counterplay against the centre has much less to bite on. The ChessBase page sums up the selling point — “only three potential reactions from Black” — and the introduction shows how the resulting positions echo familiar reversed setups from the Réti and the Catalan.

The Triceratops System is published in the ChessBase 60 Minutes series (July 2024), so this is a focused overview rather than an encyclopaedia. Bauer still packs the videos with recent model games from Carlsen, Aronian, Grischuk, Navara and Kuzubov, a player he describes as having wide experience with this system. If you want a broader low-theory 1.d4 setup to go with it, compare it with other titles in our chess courses list.

How the Triceratops System Works

Against 3…c5: take, then expand with b4

Bauer considers 4.dxc5 the only serious try. After 4…Qa5 his main line is 5.a3, regaining space with b4, Bb2 and c4, then choosing between g3/Bg2 and e3/Be2 (he prefers the fianchetto). The long-term plan is clear: once Black’s rooks reach c8 and d8 and the queen goes to b8 or a8, White re-routes a knight to e3 and starts pushing g4 or h4. For players who like surprises, 5.e4 is offered as a sharp side weapon with pawn sacrifices that are “quite tricky to handle for Black”.

Against 3…Bg7: the e4 centre

If Black allows 4.e4, White gets a classical centre with the c-pawn still able to support it from c3. After …d6 the main move is Bd3, with Bc4 and a Bb5+ line as alternatives. Bauer explains when d4–d5 gains a tempo (after …Nc6) and when closing the centre makes sense — for example when Black’s rook has gone to e8 and is no longer ready to support …f5, as in Carlsen vs Radjabov, Moscow 2010.

Against 3…d5: the main test

The most popular reply stops e4 for good. Here the recipe is 4.e3, a quick b4 and Bb2, with Be2 as the flexible follow-up and c4 available at any moment. Bauer argues that the g7-bishop is often “biting on granite” against d4, and he walks through games from top players on both sides, including several of Vachier-Lagrave’s experiences as Black and one of his own Bundesliga games from 2024.

“By opting for this solid formation, White basically has to be ready for only three different follow-ups by Black.” — GM Christian Bauer, conclusion

Who Should Try the Triceratops System

  • 1.d4 and 2.Nf3 players who dread long King’s Indian and Grünfeld main lines.
  • Practical players who prefer rich middlegames with few early exchanges.
  • Busy players who want a ready plan after one evening of study.

It is not a full repertoire: there is nothing here on 1…d5 or 2…e6 setups, and players who enjoy fighting the King’s Indian head-on with c4 will want a mainstream line such as IM Andrew Martin — Play 6.Bg5 in the Sämisch Variation in 60 Min.

✓ Pros
  • Very little theory: three Black replies, one formation
  • Clear middlegame plans (Ne3 with g4/h4, b4 expansion, d4–d5 timing)
  • Recent elite model games, including 2023–2024 examples
  • PGN file included
✗ Cons
  • Only 1h 16m — an overview, not deep theory
  • Covers only …g6 setups after 2.Nf3
  • No exercises or tests
  • Large video files (1.50 GB) for a short course

FAQ

Is 1h 16m enough to start playing it?

Enough to start, yes — the three theory chapters give you the plans for every Black reply. Bauer’s own advice in the conclusion is to then practise and study the lines after …c5, …Bg7 with …d6, and …d5, which is what the PGN file is for.

Does it work against Grünfeld players who play …d5?

Yes. 3…d5 gets the longest theory video: White answers with e3, b4 and Bb2, keeps c4 in reserve and aims for positions where Black’s fianchettoed bishop hits a well-protected d4.

What files are included, and how is it delivered?

5 MP4 videos and one PGN file, 1.50 GB in total. Digital files. Crypto payment only. Fast delivery is handled manually after payment confirmation. Download links remain available for 7 days; save your files locally.

Final Verdict — The Triceratops System

The Triceratops System does exactly what a 60 Minutes title should: it hands you a playable, low-maintenance weapon against two of Black’s most theory-heavy defences in one sitting. Bauer’s explanations of the plans — b4 expansion against …c5, the e4 centre against …Bg7, the e3/b4 squeeze against …d5 — are clear and backed by current top-level games.

Keep expectations proportionate: this is a starter kit, not a full 1.d4 repertoire. Order the videos and PGN through Courses On Budget and check the coupons page first.
