Play 1…e5 and Make White Solve Problems

Rosen is upfront about the goal. This is his first course against 1.e4, recorded for Limitless Chess, and he recommends “lines which aren’t necessarily the most popular among high-level or grandmaster players, but they can be very effective at the amateur or club level.” The backbone is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6, a quiet-looking Petrov that turns wild after 3.Nxe5 Nc6 — the Stafford Gambit, where he promises lines in which “White’s king is dragged into the center of the board before move 15.”

The Aggressive Repertoire Against 1.e4 is not only traps. When White avoids 3.Nxe5, the repertoire switches to the Four Knights: a sharp centre fork trick against 4.Bc4 and a solid copycat setup against the Spanish Four Knights with 4.Bb5, explained through grandmaster games. Rosen asks you to pause and solve positions throughout, and says the included PGN contains his analysis and annotations. For a more classical 1…e5 approach, see the Gambit Guide Through the Open Game or browse our chess courses list.

Inside the Aggressive Repertoire Against 1.e4

Three lessons on the Stafford Gambit

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nc6 4.Nxc6 dxc6, White is a pawn up with two centre pawns, and many players relax. Rosen splits White’s replies into 5.d3, 5.Nc3 and 5.e5. Against 5.Nc3 Black develops with …Bc5, and he warns that the natural Bc4 is already a blunder; against 5.e5 the sneaky …Ne4 sets up a trap he has seen many times online when White plays the routine d3. He is honest that the Stafford is “not the most sound opening”, which is exactly why it suits club-level games where accuracy is rare.

The Four Knights: tricks and a real plan

If White plays 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.Bc4, Black strikes with the centre fork trick 4…Nxe4, regaining the piece with …d5. Part 2 deals with the scary-looking Bxf7+ and other deviations. Against 4.Bb5, the longest video (36:50) recommends simply copying White with …Bb4, then shows a middlegame plan with …Ne7, …c6 and kingside play, using a 2011 game in which Vallejo Pons, then rated over 2700, was beaten by Granda Zuniga.

Defusing White’s gambits

Against 2.Qh5 the answer is calm development with …Nc6 — Rosen even tells the story of his first tournament game as an eight-year-old in this position. Against the Danish he declines with …d5 after c3 instead of grabbing pawns, with a Josh Friedel game from Beijing 2008 as the model. Against the Halloween Gambit (4.Nxe5 in the Four Knights) he gives the piece back with …Bb4 rather than retreating to g8 and suffering.

Falkbeer Counter Gambit against the King’s Gambit

The final lesson answers 2.f4 with 2…d5, the most aggressive reply he could find. It starts with a warm-up — if White takes on e5, …Qh4+ is already crushing — and moves on to the main lines and a 1995 master game where White resigned under a lasting Black initiative.

“To get the most out of this course, you’ll want to actively engage yourself and take these moments to actively think and predict what will come next.” — IM Eric Rosen, introduction

Who Will Enjoy This Repertoire

  • Club and online players up to about 1800 who want to win quickly with Black against 1.e4.
  • Blitz and rapid players — the Stafford and centre fork lines are full of traps that work best on the clock.
  • Juniors and improving players who need safe answers to the Scholar’s Mate, Danish, Halloween and King’s Gambit.
  • 1…e5 players looking for a sharper alternative to long Spanish theory.

It is not meant for strong tournament players who need objectively sound lines — Rosen himself says the Stafford is not fully sound. For a classical, long-term 1.e4 e5 repertoire, GM Jan Gustafsson — Lifetime Repertoires: 1.e4 e5 is a better match.

✓ Pros
  • Fun, aggressive lines with many practical traps
  • Covers the gambits club players actually meet: Danish, Halloween, King’s Gambit, Scholar’s Mate
  • Three full lessons on the Stafford Gambit
  • Model games and interactive pause-and-solve moments
  • Annotated PGN file included
✗ Cons
  • The Stafford is objectively dubious against well-prepared opponents
  • No dedicated lessons on the Vienna, the Bishop’s Opening or 3.d4 against 2…Nf6
  • Aimed at 1800 and below — stronger players will outgrow it
  • No separate exercise or test files

FAQ

Is the Stafford Gambit sound?

Not fully, and Rosen says so. His case is practical: White has many natural moves that lose quickly, and at club and online level that is where the points come from.

What if White does not take on e5 after 2…Nf6?

The main alternative covered is 3.Nc3, answered with …Nc6 and the Four Knights: the centre fork trick against 4.Bc4, the Halloween Gambit after 4.Nxe5, and a solid copycat plan against 4.Bb5.

Final Verdict — Aggressive Repertoire Against 1.e4

The Aggressive Repertoire Against 1.e4 delivers what the title promises for its target audience. Rosen’s Stafford lessons are packed with traps, the centre fork trick and Falkbeer give you the initiative early, and his answers to the Danish, Halloween and Scholar’s Mate turn common club-level weapons into comfortable positions for Black. His teaching style — stories, pause-and-think moments and clear warnings — makes the material easy to absorb.

If you are rated 1800 or below and want to enjoy your Black games, it is a good buy; stronger players should treat it as a surprise package. Get the videos and PGN through Courses On Budget and see the coupons page first.
